Single Monuments

A Single Monument is a monument that covers one grave allotment. It can be as large or small as the family likes, as long as it is in keeping with the rules, height and size restrictions of the cemetery. Single monuments are made of granite, sandstone or marble. They usually consist of kerbs, a slab (also known as a ledger), a base and a headstone. A Single Monument may alternatively have a concrete slab that is covered with marble or granite pebbles, marble chips, or granite tiles. It can also be left uncovered by any slab, and filled with earth to allow the family to plant a garden.

A Single Monument can be designed to accommodate more than one burial or interment in the plot. A Single Monument that will eventually have two inscriptions for two people buried together, may be referred to as a double depth headstone. The monument will usually be covered by a granite slab, also known as a ledger, which can be removed and replaced by a stonemason when the time comes to open the monument for a second burial.
